Most owners find either a “490” series bracket (single gate) or a “491” series (dual gate). If the stamp is gone, measure the bolt spacing: 3 inches center-to-center is the 490, 4 inches is the 491. Aftermarket steel brackets are available and often thicker than the OEM stamping, but the mounting geometry has to match exactly or the arm binds and the motor strain climbs. Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags toward the post at rest. The post bracket has cracked or the hinge weld has begun to pull. The opener is now lifting the gate’s dead weight instead of swinging it, and motor life drops sharply.
• A visible crack at the bolt hole or along the bend line. Stamped brackets fatigue from cyclic loading. Once a crack opens, it propagates quickly; the bracket is now a countdown, not a fix-it-later item.
• The opener arm scrapes the gate face or the post. The gate bracket has shifted or bent, changing the arm’s travel geometry. The scraping sound is the motor telling you to stop using it until it’s corrected.
• Loud popping or groaning during opening or closing. A loose bolt in a worn bracket hole lets the gate rock against the hardware. Every cycle enlarges the hole and adds play to the system.
• The gate never fully closes or binds before the limit is reached. Hinge plates that have torn loose from the post let the gate drop, so the close limit setting no longer matches the actual travel distance.
